DON’T DROWN IN YOUR FEARS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH

When we become anxious and fearful about whether we will overcome health challenges, or even whether we will live or not – then that anxiety and fear feeds upon itself and takes us into a downward spiral – where we become even more anxious, fearful, and worried about the state of our health.

Stop the Downward Spiral

This is when you want to stop that downward spiral – because the direction is down and under the water, into a circulating and endless eddy of fear, worry, doubt.  We become our thoughts – so if you are constantly thinking about how bad this is, “oh my god, I don’t want to suffer and become an endless burden on my spouse, my children, my grandchildren, and my friends.”  Those repeating thoughts are not moving you in the direction that you want to go. You want to be positive and feel good about yourself – because those thoughts help you mobilize the biochemicals in your body that you need to heal.

Live in the Present Moment

Learn to be present in the moment.  Stop and ask yourself: “How do I feel right now”, and wait for the answer.  Maybe you will notice that you are not in pain right now, or that your pain has diminished.  Developing a looping pattern of catastrophizing- worrying what if the worse –because I have this condition…  will NOT help you. And if “THE END” really is near, then don’t you want to prepare for it with dignity, being able to face that reality with acceptance and compassion.

So why do a healing practice? 

Because we want to put ourselves in the best state possible to activate all those good biochemicals that help us heal.  That means that our immune system, our cardiovascular system, our musculoskeletal system, endocrine, digestive system, reproductive system, and all our systems are working in harmony to do their job.  And their job is to keep us healthy by maintaining homeostasis, the balance of our energy and systems.

Fear Drains Your Energy

So your thoughts and fears – your anxiety – which is lodged deep in your gut about whether you will emerge okay and overcome this sickness, those fears and emotions, they take energy  — they sap energy out of your reserve of energy.  Our energy is what activates our consciousness and allows us to live in the physical world.  When we have good, positive energy the quality of our life is great— when we have less energy the quality of our life is slow, dull, difficult.  So when your body is fighting off whatever ‘disease’ you have, that commands a substantial portion of your limited quantity of energy.  And your worry, fear about ‘what might happen’ is sapping off another chunk of your energy – that is just going down the drain. So, what energy do you have left for healing?  Answer. Very little.

A Healing Practice

A healing practice will help you to focus on the present moment to actually stop and take inventory of how you feel, in your body, mind, and spirit. When you stop to take inventory, that stops the spiral of downward emotions and fears and anxieties that are eating you up inside. By interrupting that downward fall into the well of despair, you give yourself an opportunity to choose a different response, which helps you push you up towards the light and  towards health.  A healing practice gives you the skills to build upon so that you can move towards hope and compassion and faith.  Those skills or habits build upon renewing emotions that safeguard your energy and re-direct it towards creating and maintaining the biochemicals that will heal us – if we give ourselves the space to do that.
